Jazz was a marriage of the melodic and chord structures of European music with the rhythms of African music. African music was all about chanting and dancing to percussion, thus so are the musical forms that descended from it.

European music is largely descended from church music, which is all about melody, harmony, and chords with very little percussive rhythm as dancing was not the purpose, and was, if anything discouraged. Rap and hip hop is not about melody nearly as much as rhythm. It’s not about the note being played but the impact it makes. That’s because the sounds aren’t meant to mimic lyrical melodic instruments like a church organ, choir, or symphony, but instead are used as percussion. It's not even music, its sound imitating music Current rap feels very stagnant, much like bro country or hair metal in 1990, and poised for a new genre of music, or a new style of rap to take over. As a result, hip hop is losing ground in pop culture to Korean Pop music. In fact, in most of the current trap music, the lyrics are much more self-serious, vulnerable, and sad than one would expect from hip hop. Current mumble rap is largely derivative garbage. A lot of other hip hop influenced pop music like Beyonce became anthems for single women who wanted to dance, basically marrying 80’s disco with 90’s techno and 2000’s hip hop. It’s a similar feeling, I’d imagine, that teens in the late 70’s felt when they heard Van Halen 1 for the first time.

Webbie, Boosie, DMX, etc feels like you’re going to war with an army at your back, like no one can hurt you and every woman wants your dick. There will always be a genre for folks who want music that makes them feel cool, confident, and sexy, and hip hop filled that niche in spades in the late 90’s. See, those genres are all about vulnerability and pain. Grunge, by and large, didn’t do that, and neither did Pop Punk. In the 70’s, you had music like “Stranglehold”, “Rock Candy”, and “Hair of the Dog” that made you feel cool and confident just listening to it. So, remember how I said that pop punk’s mainstream popularity hinges on it filled a niche for fun music that girls could dance to that boys weren’t ashamed to enjoy as well? Hip hop fills a different niche also largely vacated by rock n roll music in the 90’s: songs that make you feel like a 10ft tall bullet proof badass. You can’t say you’ve never had fun grinding on some drunk to some Juvenile, Lil Jon, or Ludacris at the club or a party unless you’re a goddamn liar or really really really old.
